Daily Early Literacy Games

Last time we talked about playing beginning letter sound games throughout your day.

Another phonemic activity is called segmenting.  When you segment a word you say the sounds that make up a word.

The game I play with my kid goes like this.

I’m thinking of a word.  The sounds in the word are “/C/ /a/ /t/”.

When you first start playing this game your child will likely respond with something that sounds nothing like what you just said.  In order to help them here it say it again this time instead of saying each sound individually make each sound in cat longer by saying “ccccccccccccaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttt”.

Perhaps this time your child will recognize the word.

Do this a lot with all types of words.  Three letter words are a great way to start.

Here is a list of words I would suggest beginning with.

dog
cat
hog
bed
sad
mad
mom
dad
had
hat
sat
duck
hut
but
cut

how many three letter words can you think of to add to this list!  Have fun playing sound games.  Phonemic awareness is preparing your child to read!
